TODAYS ISSUE: Life as an Initiation

Sometimes, no matter what you try, life just seems to get harder. ‘It’s not fair, why me?’ We curse those people who say that ‘you attracted it’ or ‘it was soul’s choice’ because in the moment that doesn’t help us very much.
But this might.
Whoever said life was meant to be easy? Seriously, where did that come from? I do not know of a single time in history where human life was ever easy. You can follow your heart, your bliss, your joy as much as you like, but opportunities for growth – otherwise known as problems - will always present themselves. Life teaches us to be more capable, more knowledgeable, more skilled and more caring. It’s simple – life teaches us to be MORE. This is why life is hard, because if there were no challenges or tests then we could not progress. Life is a series of initiations.

But life also operates on several levels, and whatever we encounter on one we are bound to have to meet on the others. And so it is that inner knowledge must be applied to the material world. No matter how far we travel in our inner world – how many courses we take, rituals we perform, readings we receive, guides, angels and masters we encounter – we are bound to still encounter problems in the world of flesh of our daily lives. My initial pull to things alternative, over twenty years ago, was as a route to escape life. I have now come full circle and learned that personal and spiritual development is as much about washing the dishes and paying the bills as it is about Pranayama and Gnosis.

2011: A Good Year

Twelve months ago I was optimistic about the start of the new decade – and I remain so.
2011 is a good year for all those consciously walking – or trying to walk - the path toward self-realisation and self-determination. For those who see no value in this path then this year and this decade might not be so easy. Let’s look at some of the obstacles that we might meet along the way.

Are you facing unemployment? Smile and kiss goodbye to the dehumanising world of paid employment. This is the time to discover your real talents and abilities, receive fair reward for your own efforts and be respected as a unique individual. All these things happen in the world of self-employment. OK, it isn’t that easy, there are bills to pay and maybe a job – any job – will have to do for the meantime, but I am talking about a long term fix to the returning spectre of unemployment. The idea that self-employment is precarious and that working for someone else provides security is a myth. When working for others you are the subject of their destiny, their life choices and their mistakes. The bigger the company the less the workforce are deemed to matter, and only in a few exceptional cases (Google? Apple?) is this any different. Learn how to make the shift in your own time here.

Poor health, low energy? Return to nature. Swear off faddy diets. Eat varied and eat fresh – food untouched by the hand of the ‘food-business’. Nothing processed, homogenised, reformed or cooked to death. When did you last eat an avocado, cockles, raw chocolate? Or meat? The body requires all these strange things and more - and it won’t thank us for saving money on 4 pizzas for £1 in the supermarket.

Sick of angry politics and failed politicians? Tell me of the fabled time when it was any different? Male dominated, testosterone fuelled political debate has never worked and it’s long past time that we woke up to that. Rise above the false choices of red, blue, yellow or green.

Worried for the future of society? Leave aside for the moment how others are helped by others – instead focus on helping others yourself. If you care about community then get involved in community, if you care about animals then get involved with animals. Cuts in government funding are so damaging precisely because so many people would rather pay taxes for someone else to get involved in society than to do it themselves. If you care, break this cycle. If you are already involved, then shun the rules and do it your way.

Feeling unsettled and nervous about your life? Forget about aligning your energies and instead take more drastic action. Turn off the TV and the radio. Stop buying newspapers and magazines. Filter which websites you browse. However well news media presents itself it is all 90% opinion and 10% fact. Use the time and money you have saved to learn a new skill and develop a new interest. Empower yourself in baby steps. Start to accept that whatever other people might say THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU.

Take the power back. It is contrary to almost everything that we are told but the truth is that YOU are the most important and powerful influence in your life, for good or ill. You are unique, it has been said so many times yet the implications are not understood. You cannot compare yourself to anyone else. You are not part of a collective, you are an individual and the only way forward for you, me and the planet is to recognise and harness this. Pursue your interests – however unusual - and expand your individuality. Go your own way. Invisible doors WILL begin to open.

And after all this, if you still ‘fail’, then at least you will ‘fail well’, with dignity and uniqueness intact, a shining example of what humanity can be. And then, magically, the 'fail' becomes a PASS.

Until next time
Richard
