Volcanic Ash Clouds.
I have learned through
experience not to automatically trust what I am told. I will believe
something only when I have investigated it fully and satisfied myself
about it. I thoroughly recommend this approach, it's saves a lot of
disappointment.
So my 'spider sense' went into
overdrive when I watched the news back in April about European airspace
closing due to volcanic ash clouds from Iceland which planes could
somehow not fly through. 'There's something not right here' I thought.
The reports didn't feel right at all. So I investigated. I urge you to do the same.
Remember the maps of Europe on
the TV news showing where the ash had spread to? Well, as it turns out
they were not satellite photographs, but COMPUTER PROJECTIONS. No-one
actually knew where the ash had spread, they could only guess.
And remember when they said
that planes couldn't fly through the ash becuase they would fall out of
the sky? Well, lo and behold weeks later it turns out they could after
all!
So flights all across and out of Europe were shut down for
days on end, for what precisely?
What were they up
to?
USA.
The mysterious clouds of ash did not however
interfere with my trip to San Francisco last month. And what a trip it
was. It is difficult to put into words how profoundly different life
over there is from the good old UK, but I'll try to pinpoint it.
Here in the UK we are obsessed with the past,
and in a funny way so is America - the difference being that we have
one and they don't -
and they are better off for it. They are not
shackled by tradition and an establishment that always prevents change
and progress. In many ways the UK, beautiful though it and its people
are, is stuck in the past and fighting the future. How can we create
paradise on Earth if we are always remembering the monarchy, 1066, The
Battle of Britain and the rest of our glorious history? Simple answer -
we can't. The future belongs only to those prepared to abandon the
past.
The General Election.
An old man once said to me that the two
biggest growth areas of the next hundred years were
psychic
development and
co-operation. I only recently understood what he meant
by the latter.
Co-operation is all
around us now - the whole
concept of Google, You Tube, Ebay and Facebook is collaborative
and open source - we help each other and we share what we know. And now
the idea has reached into a previously dark corridor, with the
establishment of the first coalition government in the UK since World
War Two.
Of course, politics
is still domianted by big boys with their toys, gangs and silly games,
but this development offers great potential. By encouraging
co-operation, diminishing confrontation and doing what works - whoever
had the idea, we might have a chance of progress in Britain. As always,
there are plenty that want to turn the clock back, and it might yet
fail, but if it succeeds we are all the better for it - whatever party
we did or did not vote for.
So in this new spirit of collaboration...
